Ansu gets Books & Laptop Donations
 

The Anambra State University has received a donation of books from an illustrious son of the State and a benefactor, Dr. David Akosa Okongwu. Dr. Okongwu, a renowned Scientist and former Director-General of the National Office for Technology Acquisition and Promotion (NOTAP) Abuja made the donation at Uli when he visited the Vice Chancellor in his office. Making the donation, Dr. Okongwu said he was moved by the desire to contribute his quota to the growth of the State University and to assist in the education of the young ones. He praised the developmental strides of the University Management and wished them well in their quest to make the University great. He promised to assist the University in establishing linkages with international organizations. Dr. Okongwu appealed to highly placed indigenes of the State to come to the aid of the University in whatever capacity they can.

Receiving the books, the Vice Chancellor, Professor I.P. Orajaka thanked the donor for the wonderful gesture and promised that the University will put the books to Maximum use in teaching and learning. He called on other Anambrarians to emulate the goodwill and philanthropic gestures of Dr. Okongwu.

The University also received a donation of twenty-five thousand books worth more than N3.5million from an association known as, The Institute For Anambra Development (TIFAD) Incorporated, based in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. The Institute, made up of indigenes of Anambra State, had earlier made a similar donation of books to the University. According to the Co-ordinator of the group, Mr. Henry Onwubiko, the donation is the humble contribution of Anambrarians in Diaspora to the growth of the young University in their home state. Speaking while receiving the consignment of books at the University Library, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ifeanacho Paul Orajaka expressed profound delight at the enormous quantity of the books and thanked the donors for the wonderful gesture. He implored the indigenes of the state and other stakeholders to emulate the TIFAD in contributing their quota to the growth and sustenance of the University. He deplored the non-existence of the reading culture among the present generation of students. According to the Vice-Chancellor, “the best student is he/she who has read the most books”. Speaking earlier, the Acting University Librarian, Mr. Norbert Agbanu, commended the Vice-Chancellor for attracting donations to the University through his international connections. He stated that the books span over vast areas of study and appealed tostudents to make good use of the Books. The Vice-Chancellor was accompanied to the library by the Registrar, Mr. Sam Ofoegbu, and the Bursar, Prince Chinedu Okeke. In another development, Anambra State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Kay Onyechi has said that quality education cannot be possible in the absence of a functional library stocked with books for students to read and make reference. The Commissioner made this assertion at Anambra State University, Uli Campus, while inspecting the books worth over N3.5m donated to the University by the Institute for Anambra Development (TIFAD) Incorporated, an association of Anambra State indigenes based in Atlanta Georgia, U.S.A. she thanked the donors immensely and stated that the donation is the outcome of Governor Peter Obi's appeal to Anambrarians in Diaspora to assist the young State University in whatever way they can. This appeal, she said, was followed up by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Ifeanacho Orajaka during a visit to the United States of America. Dr. Onyechi, who was overwhelmed by the quantum and enormity of books donated, admonished students of the Institution to shun cultism and other vices, and to make maximum use of the books. She commended the University Management for maintaining a clean and serene environment suitable for learning. Responding, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ifeanacho Orajaka thanked the commissioner for her interest and commitment to the growth of the University. He expressed gratitude to Governor Peter Obi for attracting such a wonderful donation to the University. The Vice-Chancellor revealed that the TIFAD had promised to assist the University Medical School with medical equipment in due course. In his reaction, the President of the Students Union of the University, Comrade Paul Okafor paid glowing tributes to the State Governor Mr. Peter Obi and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Orajaka for their untiring effort in making the University a model. He promised that the students will make adequate use of the books. Present at the occasion were the Principal Officers of the University.

In a related development, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) recently made a donation of One hundred and ten (110) laptop computers to the University. According to the Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Commission Engr. E.C. Ndukwe, the aim is to “encourage the appreciation and use of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in the country under the Advanced Digital Access Programme for Tertiary Institutions (ADPTI)”. Under the ADPTI, beneficiary institutions are provided with laptop computers for learning, teaching, research, development, flexibility and mobility. Receiving the laptop computers, the University Bursar, Prince Chinedu Okeke, who stood in for the Vice-Chancellor expressed gratitude to the Commission for this good gesture. He assured that the computers will be put into proper use by the University as stipulated by the commission.
