Anambra State University has yet made another break through as Shell Petroleum Development Company Port-Harcourt - Rivers State collaborates with the University on the man power and material needs of the University.
The company in a show of its readiness to assist the University recently donated over 166 latest books, journals and maps to the Geology Department of the University.
Speaking while presenting the package at the Senate Chamber of the University at Uli, the University liaison Officer Shell Petroleum Development Company Prof. Olayinka Ogunkoya said that the observed dedication of the authorities of the University to develop ANSU as manifested in the number of Professors and Senior academic staff that graced the presentation make the collaboration hopeful and assuring.
He said that SPDC is interested in capacity development, concentrates on exploration and production discipline, geo-physics, geology, petroleum engineering and geomatrics, revealing that the stuff the three lecturers from ANSU, Dr. Osita Chiaghanam, Michael Egbunike and Chukwuemeka Odumodu are made off give confidence to SPDC as they do their internship in the company and assured the University authorities of the readiness of Shell Petroleum Development Company to keep the collaborative partnership alive.
In his welcome speech earlier, the Vice Chancellor of the University represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Uli campus, Prof. Amechi Oyeka thanked the SPDC for the gesture to the University and declared that as a young University, assistance are solicited from every sources like the SPDC has done and appealed to other corporate and public bodies to emulate the gestures of SPDC.
She assured the SPDC of judicious use of the donations but pleaded with the SPDC to focus their energy more on those other areas of the University interest.
The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Prof. Gordian Obi in his contribution stated that it is the avowed policy of the Geology department to produce functional students and professionals who will meet the employment requirements of companies like the SPDC as they graduate but stressed its possibility through collaboration like this one between SPDC and ANSU, adding that teaching and mentorship, provision of laboratory equipment and vehicles for field trips, rich library and sponsorship of conferences and workshops will see the realization of the objectives of the department and the University at large.
The Head, Department of Geology, Dr. Osita Chiaghanam in a brief remarks expressed joy for the SPDC's gestures promising that the Department of Geology shall remain grateful particularly in keeping with the collaboration especially the internship (research) of the Geology staff.
Other speakers including Engr. Dr. Sam Chukwujekwu of Engineering, Prof. Onuchukwu of the School of Post Graduate Studies, Dr. Nwafia of Basic Medical Faculty and Mrs. Emy-Egbe of Biology Department called for diversification of the activities of SPDC to such disciplines like Engineering, Medicine and Science.
The vote of thanks was given by the Dean, School of Post Graduate Studies Prof. Onuchukwu. High point on the occasion was formal presentation of the books by the SPDC University Liaison Officer, Prof Olayinka Ogunkoya.
Present at the presentation ceremony were Deputy Vice Chancellor Igbariam campus, Prof. Anene, Registrar, Mr. Sam Ofoegbu, Deans of Faculties, Heads of Departments and Directors of Divisions among other staff, including Dr. Miebaka Moslem of SPDC Port-Harcourt.
