Accountants Visits ANSU Vice Chancellor

The President of the Institute of Charted Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) Chief Dr. Richard Ugochukwu Uche recently visited Anambra State University. Addressing the Vice Chancellor when he paid him a courtesy call in the Senate/Council Chamber, Chief Ugochukwu who is the 44th President of the Institute, said he was impressed with the serene environment of the University which was conducive and ideal for learning. He commended the University for scaling through ICAN membership examination for members and urged the University to continue to excel in other endeavours. He stated that the Institute has forty-five districts nationally and internationally and has over twenty-five thousand members and two hundred thousand student-members. He urged the University to encourage her students to enroll into the Institute particularly now that the entry requirement has been liberalized. President of the Institute and his entourage for the visit and for the cordial relationship existing between her and the University. He was particularly happy that the University was successful with the ICAN accreditation exercise. He assured that the University will not relent in the production of quality graduates.

The ICAN President and his entourage later held an interactive session with the staff and students of the Department of Accountancy. The Institute presented souvenirs to the Vice Chancellor and the Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences. The ICAN Presidents entourage included the former ICAN President and former Deputy Governor of Anambra State, Chief Ugochukwu Nwankwo, the Registrar of the Institute, Mr. Olutoyin Adepute, the Head of Corporate Affairs, Mr. Dayo Ajigbotosho among others.

In a related but seperate occassion, The National President and Executive members of the Association of National Accountants of Nigeria (ANAN) recently paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Anambra State University, Professor Ifeanacho Paul Orajaka at the Igbariam campus of the University. The visit was part of activities marking the Association's Annual Conference. Receiving the team, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ifeanacho Paul Orajaka welcomed them to the University and hoped that the relationship between the University and ANAN will be beneficial to the young University, assuring that the University Management will continue to improve on the facilities available in the Department of Accountancy with the aim of producing quality graduates. He advised the members of staff of the Department to endeavour to belong to their Professional Associations to update their knowledge and acquire more experience. He emphasized on the need for Government/Private partnership in Education, stressing that the Government alone cannot fully shoulder the responsibilities and burden of education.

Reacting, the National President of ANAN, Dr. Samuel Nzekwe thanked the Vice-Chancellor and members of the University Management for the warm reception accorded them. He said that they were in Anambra State for the Mandatory Continuous Programme Development (MC PD) of the Association which is aimed at 'making members more productive in their profession.'

He appealed to the University to encourage and assist their members to participate in the MC PD programme. According to the ANAN President, their visit to the University was to encourage the Institution on the need for strict standards in the training of Accountants noting that the Association is collaborating with Pittsburg University, U.S.A., for capacity building programmes.

Earlier, the State Chairman of the ANAN, Anambra State Chapter, Sir Uche Ezeliora had thanked the University Management for their hospitality, saying that their visit was to have taken place last year, but was postponed due to reasons beyond their control. He said that the State Chapter had plans to donate books to higher Institutions within its catchment areas; namely the Federal Polytechnic Oko, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka and Anambra State University Uli. He appealed to the Lecturers in the department of Accountancy to encourage their students to dress well because Accountants, Bankers and Lawyers are noted for dressing well. High point of the courtesy call was the donation of 93 books to the University by the ANAN.

Reacting to the donation of the books to the University, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor I.P. Orajaka said he felt highly elated and thanked the donors for their kind gesture. He promised that the students will put the books to maximum use.

Present at the occasion were Chief (Mrs.) I. Okafor, the Vice President of ANAN, Dr. Sir Peter Ibekwe, Registrar ANAN, Chief J.K.O. Odurero, former National President of ANAN, Professor Ambrose Okwoli, Director-General, Nigerian College of Accountancy, Jos, Dr. (Sir) Uche Ezeliora, State Chairman of ANAN among others.
