VC Urges Students to be Committed
 

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ifeanacho Paul Orajaka has urged University students to be committed to their studies and to distance themselves from such vices as cultism and rape. Prof. Orajaka made this call at Uli during the Send-Forth/Induction and Award Programme organized by the Nigerian Mining and Geosciences Society (NMGS) Students chapter. The Vice Chancellor regretted that the once challenging Geology profession has been given a bad image by Geology students who engage their time in cult activities and rape. He reminded them of the exion that the best Geology student is the student who has seen and known the most of rocks and read the most of books. Prof. Orajaka charged the students to be proud of the profession as it offers them bright employment opportunities and prospects. He informed the audience that the curriculum and course content of the department of Geology in the University is very rich.

In his own remarks, the then Head of Geology Department, Mr. Austin Nnolim expressed delight at the successful hosting of the event. He praised the organizers for a wonderful outing despite the fact that the idea was conceived at a very short notice. He hinted of plans to establish linkages with such bodies as Chevron, Geomarrine, Geohazards and Ciscon. He implored the students to work hard and defend the reputation and integrity of the Geology profession.

In her address, the President of the Nigerian Mining and Geoscience Society, students chapter, Miss Chikodi Chinwobi stated that the economy of the nation can only be stable if proper foundation is laid for its survival. She called on the guests to assist the Association in achieving her lofty ideals. She advised her fellow students to be disciplined and hardworking.

Present at the ceremony were renouned Geologist among whom were Dr. Johnbosco Onyeji of Deeporater Department, Chevron Nig Ltd Lagos, Mr. Emeka Anyadike of Geological and Geophysical modeling, Siscom Nig Ltd Warri, Mr. Alex Nwegbu of National Geoliazards Monitoring centre, Awka and Mr. Mma Okezie of Geomarine Systems Nig Ltd Port Harcourt.

The Chairman on the occasion was Prof. Luke Anike, Dean Faculty of Natural Sciences, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
